Beautiful skin is the universal standard by which we judge beauty, and obtaining flawless skin is for some, a life long journey. There are some who are born with incredible genes that include perfect skin, and there are some who will spend a large portion of their life doing what they can to obtain that "Dream" skin...I am admittedly one of the latter.
I have as a result, skin that is okay, not perfect, not horrible, just perfect, and my current skin obsession is fading brown spots and discolorations, evening out my skin tone. That is where my homemade skin Lotion comes in. As many of you probably know, serums are expensive, they can cost from $20- $100. vitamin C lotions are used for different reasons but the most common use is for skin regeneration, and all these serums contain Ascorbic Acid.
Ascorbic Acid is a form of Vitamin-C. Ascorbic acid helps reduce the look of fine lines, scars and wrinkles, is an antioxidant, stimulates collagen, helps skin repair itself, reverses damage and increases the immune function of skin cells. These are benefits of Topical application.
There is no need to buy an expensive lotion when you can make one at home. Ascorbic acid oxidizes very quickly and turns yellow, therefore many lotions you buy will be tinted yellow or orange so that you cannot determine if they are degrading or not. There is nothing special about the base or cream that the serum is made out of, other than the fact that it will have more chemicals that you may not want to put on your skin. A benefit of making a lotion at home is that you can control how much Ascorbic acid is in it, what other ingredients are in the serum, AND you can make a new, FRESH batch every few days so your serum will always be top quality. This is a quick and easy one as you won't be making your own lotion before this step, you'll be using whatever you have now.
Ingredients:
1/4 tsp Ascorbic acid powder OR crystals ( it CANNOT be vitamin C tablets or chewables, because they contain fillers that are NOT water soluble
5 ml warm water
1/4-1/2 c facial lotion
dissolve the ascorbic acid into the water completely without heating it up too hot and then add the Lotion. Mix well. At this point you can add a couple drops of essential oil if you like, I like to use lavender as it is anti-inflammatory.
Put this mixture into a container or bottle that is NOT clear. Dark blue or amber glass bottles are best, I sometimes use an old blue Nivea facial lotion jar.
I found my Ascorbic acid crystals at the nutrition house, but most natural health places should carry them, and superstore will special order you a huge tub if you ask the pharmacist... prices of Ascorbic acid are generally very good. I bought a 125 g bottle for $11, very good price.
You can make this fresh every few days and can increase or decrease the amount of ascorbic acid in it. However understand that the more Ascorbic acid, the more you skin will feel, hot, burning, redness and tingling will occur, so do not add more than 1/4 tsp at a time after the initial 1/4 tsp. This way you can judge the right % for your skin. It is best to start with smaller amounts of the Ascorbic Acid than to start out with to much. When the Lotion starts going yellow you know it is time to throw the old stuff out and make a new fresh batch. Also remember that ascorbic acid makes your skin more sensitive and also more sensitive to the sun so try to use this only at night.
Remember when using facial products that the order you put them on is important. Toner is first, then the serum, then your moisturizer and lastly your Sunscreen. To ensure great skin as you age always wear a sunscreen, I use a broad spectrum SPF 60 and I apply it almost every time I go out.
